Technology working for ecology
These fully compostable bags are made from three separate films of sustainably-produced wood pulp and corn starches, which have all been tested to the British Standard EN 13432 for biodegradability. The two cellulose layers work together to protect the coffee from oxygen and moisture, while the corn starch sealant layer on the inside of the bag both provides the seal required for dry products and protects the taste.
The Econic bags are a world-first for freshly roasted coffee as the one-way breathability allows the release of CO2 gases that roasted coffee expels. The gases are vented through the top bag seal, which replace the traditional non-renewable valve buttons that are commonly used to package freshly roasted coffee. So now you can enjoy the taste – without the waste!
Convex Plastics developed these eco-friendly bags and tested their biodegradability in a controlled composting trial at a Waikato bark composting facility in order to validate their breakdown rate. After 14 weeks, the packs had almost completely disappeared, with only a few small traces left in the soil. Check out the photos to get a better idea!
